William O. Agnew

William Odell Agnew was born on July 28th, 1947, at home, in Anderson, South Carolina. He was the beloved son of William Thomas Agnew and Minnie Lucille (Scott) Agnew.  Raised in a loving family, he grew up alongside his siblings, Jay Walter Agnew, Minnie Patricia Agnew Wardlaw, and Maxie O’Neal (Angela) Agnew, Sr. Although his older brother, Thomas Henry Agnew, passed just a day after his birth, William carried his memory throughout his life.

William attended Geer-Gantt High School, graduating with the class of 1964. With a passion for learning and athletics, particularly football, he pursued higher education at Benedict College, where he majored in Physical Education. In May 1968, he graduated, ready to embark on a life of service, family, and community.

At the age of 21, William answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. Stationed in Vietnam, he was attached to the 132nd Assault Support Helicopter Company - “Hercules”. His time in the military taught him resilience and shaped his view of the world. After returning home, he furthered his education at Greenville Technical College, where he studied electronics.

William began his professional career at Dow Chemical and later moved on to work at Michelin, where he remained until his retirement. His career reflected his hard work and dedication, but his life was defined by much more than his job. Coaching was one of his greatest passions, and alongside his friend, Joe Morris, they co-coached the Johnson Blazers, a women’s softball team. The experience of mentoring young athletes brought him immense joy and satisfaction.

On September 23rd, 1969, William married his love, Patricia Ann Elder, of Heath Springs, South Carolina. Their union was a testament to love and mutual respect, and they celebrated nearly 55 wonderful years together. Their family grew with the birth of their two children, Kimberly Renee (Warren Dickey) and William Patrick, who were the pride and joy of William's life. He cherished every moment spent with his children and found even greater joy in his grandchildren—Erika Agnew, Danielle Dickey, Desmond Dickey, and Mila Agnew, also, with his god-grandchildren—Azia Burnside, Andrea Burnside, Abby Burnside, and JB Burnside, each of whom he loved dearly. A man of deep faith, William was a devoted member of Welfare Baptist Church in Belton, South Carolina. He sang in the men’s choir and served faithfully on the Trustee Board, always eager to contribute to his church community. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life, shaping his values and relationships.

When William wasn’t working or serving at church, he enjoyed various hobbies, from fishing and watching football to repairing homes and cars. His hands were never idle, and his heart was always open to those in need. Known for his kindness and generosity, William never met a stranger. His warm smile, hearty laugh, and willingness to help anyone made him a beloved figure in his community.

William’s life was a reflection of his unwavering faith, love for his family, and dedication to serving others. Though he was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas and Minnie Lucille Agnew, and his infant brother, Thomas Henry, his legacy continues through his wife, Patricia, his children, grandchildren, and the many lives he touched.

On Saturday, September 14th, 2024, William passed away, leaving a legacy of love, compassion, and faith. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, awesome big, brother, and a man who lived his life in service to others, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at Welfare Baptist Church.  Public viewing will be held on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  The interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at M. J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
