Walter Winfield Jr., was born May 17, 1928 in Anderson County, SC to the late Walter Winfield Sr., and Samella (Williams) Thornley. He was the second of two children born to this union. He attended the Belton school system.
Walter met and married Bernell (Davis) and they have 5 children: Brenda, Keith, Anita, Darryl and Walter III. For most of their married life, Walter and Bernell resided in Washington, DC. Upon Walter's retirement, they moved back to Anderson, SC.
Walter enlisted in the Marine Corps and did “boot camp” at the historical Montford Point Marine Base in NC. Walter was among the first African American recruits in the US Marine Corps trained at Montford Point. He served in the Korean War. He was honored, along with other Montford Point Marines, at the US Capital in June 2013.
Walter had a fascinating work career. He learned the printing business/trade and advanced to the management and entrepreneur levels. He excelled in the printing industry, becoming well known and respected in the printing business in the Washington DC area for his knowledge, expertise and work ethic. As Walter advanced in his career, he had the opportunity to work for the Teamsters Union and the National Association of Letters Carriers as manager of their printing departments.
All who knew Walter knew that his family meant so much to him. The love and care for his immediate family were great driving forces in his life. Many events, teachings and learnings were tailored around his immediate and extended family involvement. He loved helping and advising his children and grandchildren to meet their full potential and achievements in their lives.
Some activities Walter enjoyed most were: playing Scrabble and traveling on vacations with family and friends. He was especially proud of being a member of the local bowling team.
Walter was an active member of the Haigler Street Church of Christ in Abbeville SC until his death. He cared deeply for his church family.
Walter is predeceased by his wife, father and mother, one sister, Rebecca, one grandchild Erin Winfield, one great-grandchild Reggie Winfield, and son-in-law Albert Newton.
Walter leaves to cherish his memories, 5 children: Brenda Newton of Fountain Inn SC, Keith (Theresa) Winfield of Anderson SC, Anita (Alex) Wiley of LaPlata, MD, Darryl (Kimala) Winfield of Clinto,n MD, and Walter Winfield III of Anderson, SC. Also mourning his loss are 12 grandchildren: Todd, Leah, Elsa (Pip), Keith Jr, Allison, Jonathan, Brian, Jason, Christopher, Justin, Alaunte, and Kamaria. There are 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

The graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
