Shirley Norris Obituary

Shirley Anne Scott Norris was born and raised in Anderson County, South Carolina. She was the oldest of five children born to Johnnie Mae Scott Wilson. Shirley was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Christopher Columbus “CC” Scott and Lu Ella Leverette Scott. As a teenager, she went to live with her uncle Dave and aunt Alice Scott, who also helped guide and support her along life’s journey.

Shirley graduated from New Deal High School in 1965. While in high school, she proudly played the clarinet in the marching band. After graduation, she married James Reece Norris, and together they shared 26 years of marriage. Shirley dedicated more than 30 years of service to BASF in Anderson, South Carolina.

For over 40 years, Shirley was a faithful and active member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Starr, South Carolina. At Mt. Moriah, she served in the Women’s Ministry, media team, and flower club. She possessed a true servant’s heart and was always willing to volunteer wherever she was needed. Her giving spirit extended beyond the church as she also volunteered at a local radio station, Hospice of the Upstate, and served faithfully as a voting poll worker for more than 18 years. Shirley was also a certified notary for the State of South Carolina.

In her spare time, Shirley loved traveling to Hilton Head Island. She enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, gardening, and tending to flowers. While employed at BASF, she participated in a bowling league for many years and earned numerous trophies. She was also an honorary member of the Rollin Spokes Motorcycle Club and played an active role in planning the Scott and Leverette Family Reunion.

Shirley was known as a dependable person who always wore a beautiful smile. She will be remembered for her quick wit, bright spirit, and uniquely joyful laughter. Even during her time at the memory care facility, Shirley continued to be a blessing to others. She willingly assisted the staff, walked with residents to the dining room, and helped clean up after activities, always finding ways to care for those around her.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory: her son and daughter-in-law, James D. "Scooter" and Neicy Norris; her grandson, JaRael Norris; her great-grandchildren, Zuri and Nasir Norris; one sister, Doris (Ernest) Jones; two brothers, Clarence Wilson and Carl Scott Wilson; a devoted sister-in-law, Phyllis Norris; special nieces and nephews, Ursula (Darrel) Glaze, Chris Jones, Mashon Norris, and Jessica Norris Clinkscales; along with a host of beloved Scott and Leverette family members and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Reece Norris; her mother, Johnnie Mae Scott Wilson; one sister, Wanda Lee Jones; and a very special cousin, Virginia Scott.

Though your work on earth is done, your memories will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved you. Your kindness, laughter, smile, and loving spirit will forever be cherished and never forgotten.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. The interment will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be held on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family is at the home of her sister-in-law, Phyllis Norris, 1108 Ramona Drive, Belton, SC.
