Shirley Hammond Obituary

Shirley Mae Hammond, a beloved soul whose presence illuminated the lives of many, peacefully passed away at her home in Greenville, South Carolina, on March 22, 2024. Born on July 15, 1940, in Starr-Iva, South Carolina, to proud parents Jake Martin and Annie Ruth (Berry) Martin, Shirley's journey on this earth touched the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Shirley's life was marked by profound love and deep loss. She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, Nathaniel C. Hammond, as well as her former husband, John Junior Harrison, Sr. Shirley also mourned the passing of her twin daughters, Mary and Martha Martin, and her son, Thomas Lee Martin, amongst other cherished family members (Bessie Lou Campbell, John L. Martin, Sr., James Martin, & L.M. Martin).

Despite the profound losses she endured, Shirley found solace in the love of those she held dear. She is survived by her three daughters: Sharon Dawson Sogah (Nathaniel), Rhonda Latimer (Thomas), and Felicia Harrison (Khalil Shabazz); and her two sons, Stanley Martin and John Junior Harrison, Jr.  Shirley's love extended to her godson, David McIntosh, sisters, Rozena Mattress and Ruby Williams (Bobby), and her brothers, J. E. Martin (Nora) and Clyde Martin (Patricia). Her legacy is continued through her eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who held a special place in her heart.

Shirley's professional journey was one of dedication and perseverance. She held various roles throughout her career, from a textile factory worker to a managerial executive, embodying strength and commitment in all that she did. Her passion for caring for others shone through in her work as a child-care specialist and assisted-living caregiver, reflecting her innate spirit of compassion and kindness.

A devout member of Generostee Baptist Church, Shirley found immense joy in her faith and community. She actively participated in church activities and served in various roles, including as a Sunday school instructor and member of singing groups. Her love for God was evident in every aspect of her life, and she strove to share the message of Christ with all those around her. Shirley's diverse interests and hobbies reflected the depth of her character. From traveling to antiquing, from child care to church-related activities, Shirley embraced life with a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Above all, Shirley Mae will be remembered for her unwavering love and acceptance. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she touched the lives of many with her warm smile and open heart. Shirley's legacy of resilience and kindness will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will be a source of comfort and inspiration, guiding us with the reminder that "in faith, anything is possible." Shirley's legacy of love, strength, and faith will continue to shine brightly, a testament to a life well-lived and a heart deeply loved.
