A Time to be Born: Rubye Jewell Mathis Harris was born April 30, 1926 in Paris, Arkansas. She was the sixth of nine siblings born to Fred Mathis and Matilda Byrd Mathis.
A Time to Mourn: Rubye departed this life on Monday, March 7, 2022 at AnMed Health Medical Center.
A Time to Reflect: Rubye attended Booker T. Washington Grade School and High School. She went to Pasadena City College and afterwards moved to Tacoma, Washington. There she was employed by Todd Shipyard during World War II. Next Rubye went to nursing school and worked at Tacoma General Hospital. While working at Tacoma General, she married Isaac Anthony.
Rubye joined Miles Memorial C.M.E. Church in Tacoma, Washington. She was very active in church and held several positions: Sunday School Superintendent, Stewardess Board, usher, and choir member.
While employed at Ft. Lewis in Washington, just before her retirement in 1988, Rubye met the "love of her life", Louis E. Harris. Louis was retired from the U.S. Army and working a second career with the U.S. Navy. They were married on June 17, 1989. This union added three children.
Mr. and Mrs. Harris moved from Tacoma to Anderson, South Carolina in 2002. They united with Wilson Calvary Baptist Church, where the two were installed as Deacon and Deaconess. Rubye was a true "Prayer Warrior" and was always willing to serve where needed.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Louis E. Harris; four children, Michelle Marshall of Las Vegas, NV, Michael Harris of Mt. Vernon, NY, Gregory (Pennie) Harris of Lee Summit, MO and Nicole Harris of Landson, SC; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one godson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Rubye was the last surviving member of her parents and siblings.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home. The interment will be held at a later date at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery. Public viewing Saturday from 9:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
