Rev. John Wesley Buddin, Jr. was born December 11th, 1934 in Washington DC to Rev. John Buddin, Sr. and Mable Saxon Buddin. He grew up across the state of South Carolina, eventually settling in Greenville. After graduating from Claflin University, he was drafted into the US Army. Following the army, he taught chemistry in various schools around the state. He and his family relocated to New York in 1961 where he worked as a New York City social worker for 30 years. After attending Union and New York Theological Seminary, he began to preach as an associate pastor to several churches in the NYC area, eventually becoming a religious advisor for the Brooklyn Democratic Party. Following their time in New York, they returned to the upstate of South Carolina in 1991 where he was a pastor in various United Methodist churches. He became president of the BMCR of the upstate and a member of the Anderson County Council.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Inez Freeman Buddin, his daughter, Shirley Buddin (Russell) McCollin, his sons, John L. Buddin and Shawn T. Buddin, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
John was a gregarious, charming, witty man. Throughout his career, he was a bridge builder for young people. He will be missed. John passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at his home.
Public viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2021 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home. The interment will be held on Monday at M.J. "Dolly" Veterans Cemetery.
