Mrs. Rachel Priscilla Linton McCowan was born in Anderson County, SC, to the late Joseph and Daisy Linton on June 12, 1937. She died in Atlanta on December 27, 2023, at the age of 86.
She graduated from Westside High School in 1954 and earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Tuskegee Institute (now University) in 1958.
Upon graduation, Rachel accepted a teaching position in Anderson’s District 5, where she provided a solid education and love to her students for 30 years.
In 1963, Rachel married the love of her life, Charles McCowan, and they became parents to three boys: Kevin, Daniel and George. She was also a bonus mom to Margie Simmons and Marvin Simmons.
Rachel was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars. As the mother of three active boys, she was always present for sporting and school events. She also was a den mother for her sons’ Cub Scouts troop.
Rachel was a woman of strong faith and dedicated her life to the Lord at an early age. She was a member of Mt. Carmel CME Church, where she was active with the youth and served as co-director of the Junior Usher Board. She also served as a trustee and financial secretary.
Following the death of her husband, Rachel departed Anderson, living in both Florence, SC, and Atlanta, GA, where she helped her sons and daughters-in law care for her precious grandchildren.
In Atlanta, she attended New Calvary Missionary Baptist Church until her health failed.
She leaves to cherish her memory her brother John (Alice); sons Kevin and George; bonus children Marvin and Margie Simmons; eight grandchildren – Lanair (Tai Chi), Dezmond, Charlton, Damaris (Derrick), Morgan, Andrew, Jordan and Jonetta; and four great-grandchildren Lanair Jr., Adon, Kierra and Jazzmin.
Additionally, she touched the lives of her extended family and a community of friends who will remember her with love and laughter.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings, and husband, as well as her son, Daniel.
The homegoing celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Mt. Carmel C.M.E. Church (609 Cleveland Ave., Anderson, SC, 29624). The interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens Cemetery (3400 Highway 24, Anderson, SC, 29626). Public viewing 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a monetary donation to Mt. Carmel C.M.E Church in honor of Rachel McCowan. She was a staunch advocate of (Youth) Christian Education.
