Myrtle P. Blasingame Newton Singleton was born in Anderson County to the late Willie Sr. and Ida Lane-Blasingame on May 23, 1930. She attended Reed Street School. She was a member of Thompson Centennial United Methodist Church, a church her father, Grandfather, and great-grandfather helped build. At the age of 11, she moved with her family to Detroit Michigan.
She continued her education in the Detroit School system where she graduated from Miller High and continued up to technical college where she earned a degree in Surgical Technology. She was an active member of the Association of Surgical Technologists, Inc. She worked as a Surgical Technologist at Deaconess, and Grace Hospital in the Detroit Hospital System for 37 years. Her favorite surgery story was assisting in the Tonsillectomy of a young Mr. Stevie Wonder.
In August of 1950, she married Robert J. Newton and to that union a daughter Elishia was born. Robert preceded her in Death in 1961. In 1979 she married Quinton J. Singleton, and they continued to live in Detroit until her retirement in 1996. After which they moved back to their birthplace Anderson, SC. She served as an active member of Thompson Centennial UMC in the United Methodist Women. After her retirement, she continued to serve others by working for Goodwill Industries for 18 years.
She had two brothers and one sister: Willie Blasingame Jr. (Ethel), Nathaniel (Rosalee), and Mable C. (Fred) who preceded her in death.
She has a host of nieces and nephews with four special ones she thought of as her own: Brenda J. Sanford, Lionel, Nathaniel O, and Robert Michael Elcock (Deceased). Through the union with Quinton J. Singleton, she gained four bonus children: Quinton D. Singleton (Barbara), Thomas Singleton (Carla), Janet Dubois, and Lauretta Baylor; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Thompson Centennial United Methodist Church. The interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Public viewing on Friday from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
