Mattie Sue Jefferson

Mattie Sue Jefferson, age 86, departed this life on March 14, 2023.  She was born on January 29, 1937, in Anderson, South Carolina.

Mattie loved to share her knowledge as an educator.  She was a devoted high school teacher for over 40 years.  She taught in Holly Hill, South Carolina and Denton, Maryland.  In 1967, she joined Cardozo Senior High School, one of District of Columbia’s Public Schools where she retired in 1997.  She received many awards including the 1988 Outstanding Biology Teacher award for the District of Columbia from the National Association of Biology Teachers.  She also worked as a volunteer in the District of Columbia Science Fair and in National Science Foundation programs. Throughout her life, she was a firm believer in the power of education and a lifelong supporter of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

In line with her support of HBCUs, Mattie had the utmost love for her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.  She was a distinguished Pearl, and a member for over 66 years.  Also, she was a member of the AARP and held office as a vice-president.

Mattie was a loving daughter and sister.  She was preceded in death by her father and mother (Olin and Mary Jefferson).  She leaves to cherish her memory her only sibling Mildred Jefferson Young, and a host of relatives and friends.

Services for Ms. Jefferson will be April 3, 2023, 1:00pm at Stewart Funeral Home, Inc. 4001 Benning Road, N.E., Washington, DC 20019.

The interment will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at Generostee Baptist Church in Starr, SC.
