In Loving Memory of Marion Newell
Sunrise: May 15, 1928 – Sunset: June 18, 2025
Marion Newell, a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, departed this life peacefully on June 18, 2025, at the age of 97. She was born on May 15, 1928, in Abbeville County, South Carolina, to the late Bessie Lesley and Arthur White.
At an early age, Marion moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she built a life filled with hard work, service, and faith. She was employed for many years at Associated Retail until her retirement. Even after retiring, Marion continued to care for others through home healthcare, childcare, and housekeeping work. Her strong work ethic, quiet strength, and gentle spirit touched the lives of many.
One of her favorite pastimes was walking - and she would choose this method of transportation whenever possible. Her daily walks were not only a source of health and peace but also a testament to her independence and determination.
Marion was a devoted member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Brooklyn, where she found joy in worship and community. In 2012, she returned to her native South Carolina to be closer to her family.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lathan Newell, and her loving partner Jackson Manick. She was also preceded in death by her beloved sisters Allie Mae Clinkscales, Geneva Maddox, Queen Lesley, Ethel Fair, Estella Gray, Mazie Miller, Beatrice White, and Ophelia Martin; and brothers S.A. Lesley, Robert Lesley, Sam Lesley, Rudolph Lesley, Charles C. Lesley, Douglas Lesley, Arthur (Peter) White, Claudis White, and Cleve White.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted nieces Cornelius Glover, Shirley Putnam, Sundra Broome, Patricia (George) Tarry, Priscilla Heard, and Altheia (Taji) Richardson; nephews Jerry Clinkscales, Charles C. Lesley, Jr., and Samuel Lesley; and a host of great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
Marion's life was a quiet but powerful example of love, service, strength, and grace. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2025 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home. The interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens. Public viewing will be held Saturday from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
