John Martin, Jr. Obituary

On Monday, March 30, 2026, John Leonard Martin Jr. was called home to be with the Lord. A man of radiant warmth and an open heart, John spent his 65 years ensuring that no one ever felt like an outsider in his presence. To know John was to have a friend; he treated every new face like a long-lost companion, and his friendly demeanor made him a beloved staple of the community.

Born April 9,1960 to the late John Leonard and Annie Helen Martin in Anderson, SC., John carried a spirit of adventure and service throughout his life. From 1978 to 1981, he honorably served his country in the United States Army as a helicopter mechanic. His commitment to excellence continued long after his military service; he was a lifelong learner, earning an Associate in Industrial Technology in 1993 and an Associate in Occupational Technology in 2009 from Tri-County Technical College (TCTC). Before leaving the workforce, John was a dedicated employee at First Quality Tissue in Anderson, SC.

John’s life was a testament to his faith. A devoted member of the church, he served with humility as a Deacon of Rock Hill Baptist Church and lifted his voice in praise as a member of the choir. He was the man everyone knew—always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Outside of the church, John found peace in God’s creation, whether he was fishing, hunting, or working the land while farming.

For 40 years, John was the loving husband and partner to Alice (Sloan) Martin. He was the proud father of Kevin and Leonard Galloway, who resided away but remained close to his heart. In his life with Alice, he was a supportive stepfather to Kerry and Orlando Sloan, and a doting father to their daughter, Lanika Martin. Together, they built a beautiful, blended family where every child was a source of immense pride. He also leaves behind his sisters, Alice Faye Martin, Brenda Adams, and Jeanette Cowans, and two brothers Michael Latimer and Tridrekus Martin.

He was the heart of every gathering, a constant and joyful presence at both the Johnson and Martin family reunions. His legacy of social spirit and laughter lives on through his 15 grandchildren, and a vast host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins who looked to him as a patriarch and a friend.

He was preceded in death by his sisters Annette and Juanita Martin.
