Herbert Witcher, age 93, entered into eternal rest on December 13, 2024 at NHC nursing facility. He was born May 13, 1931 in Oglethorpe,Ga to the late Willie and Violet Watkins Witcher. He was the last of 14 children.
Herbert attended Holly Creek School System in Starr, SC and joined Holly Creek Baptist Church at an early age. At an early age, Herbert worked as a sharecropper and in cotton mills. He retired from J.P. Stevens and worked at the Boys and Girls Club, where the children called him Mr. Witcher. Many of them came back in contact with him as they got older because of the love he showed them in their younger years.
Herbert was known to be a watchman in the neighborhood on Booker St., on the westside of Anderson. He would sit on the porch and wave to everyone who passed by and kept watch on his neighbors. Herbert cared for his nieces and nephews and made sure they were provided for. They will deeply miss his sweet and quiet spirit along with the love he showed them over the years.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Violet Watkins Witcher; sisters, and brothers, Millie, Victoria, Annie Mae, Elizabeth, Blanche, Beatrice, Bernice, Ruth, Ruby, George, John D., Willie T, Joe, and a nephew raised in the home, Onice Gray Jr.
Herbert leaves these words and scripture to his beloved family, “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:6,7,8
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2024 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home. Public viewing will be held on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
