Brother Henry A. Carter, Jr., “Uncle Sonny” was born May 6, 1940 in Hartwell, GA to the late Henry Carter Sr. and Cora Bowman Carter and his stepmother was Mary Reed Carter.
He graduated from Hart County Training School in Hartwell, GA and attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA for one year before transferring to Fort Valley State University for two years. He completed his studies at Brookdale Community College in New Jersey. His service to the church and community began at Hartwell First Baptist in Hartwell, GA as the Superintendent of the Sunday School program. He then moved to Long Branch, New Jersey, where he united with Second Baptist Church, serving in many auxiliaries.
After retiring from the State of New Jersey, he moved to Anderson, SC and continued to play an active role in the church. His most enjoyable roles were driving the church van and talking to the youth. After his health began to decline and he could no longer stand, he gave up his usher duties and advised from the back pews. He also joined the Fidelity Lodge #42 F.&A.M P.H.A, served in several offices, was elected worshipful master, and was also a member of King Solomon Chapter #8, Holy Royal Arch Masons P.H.A.
Brother Carter was a very humble, quiet man who was also very generous. He would give all of himself when it came to servitude to the Lord and in times of need.
He was twice married, first to the late Virginia Pope Carter and his former wife Linda Cooper Fleetwood Carter. He was predeceased by his siblings, Erskine “Dicky” Carter, James “Skeet” Carter, Stephen Carter, John W. Reed, Audrey Adams and Barbara Reed Peterson.
He is survived by sisters, Gloria Carter Craft, Jaquelyn Carter Thomas and brother Robert Reed. He was a loving uncle to 1SG (RET) William R. Craft Jr. and Erica Craft, who were his guardians, along with his special nieces and nephews he leaves to cherish his memory; Sara Cobb (CSM RET Jessie Cobb) of Lawton, OK, Ursula Covin and Erskine R. Brent both of Long Branch, NJ, Sandra Jordan of Hartwell, GA, Zeneta Carter Jones (Payson Jones) of Seneca, SC and Linda Anderson of Maryland, Albert Adams Jr., and Donald Adams; and other relatives.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Wilson Calvary Baptist Church. The interment will follow at New Silver Brook Cemetery. Public viewing will be held on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
