Helen Johnson

Helen Lorraine Brown Johnson was born July 23, 1933, in Anderson, S. C. to the late Rena Williams Brown and Obie Elliot Brown, Sr. She was the oldest of two children and the last survivor of her immediate family.

Helen accepted Christ at an early age at Holly Springs Baptist Church, currently New Holly Light Missionary Baptist Church in Anderson, S. C.  She started her lifelong journey by attending ACTS Primary School in S. C., through the 7th grade, then moved to Washington, D. C., where she finished her education.

Helen retired from the Federal Government after working for thirty-three (33) years.  She retired as an Executive Secretary to the Deputy Chief of Forest Services, Department of Agriculture in Washington, D. C.  Upon retirement and returning to S. C., she renewed her membership in 1988 at New Holly Light Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a volunteer of the Visitation Ministry.  She also began a personal ministry of giving greeting cards for all occasions.  She then worked for LaFrance Mills, Mariner Nursing Home, Winn Dixie, and Ingles Grocery Store.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Obie and Rena Brown, Sr., son, Jerome "Tony" Johnson; brother, Obie Elliott Brown, Jr., and one nephew, Ricky Elliott Brown.

She leaves to cherish her and honor her memory, two nieces, Janice (Lendale) Swilley of Georgia and Twanda Brown of Washington, D. C. , nephew, Obie (Ericka) Brown of Sumter, S. C.; goddaughter, Linda Whitner; godson, Cedric Cannon; a companion for 20 years, Bailous Vance; and a host of great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and many, many friends.

She departed this life on the glory train bound for eternal life on August 23, 2025.  As Helen walks through the valley of the shadow of death, she fears no evil for the Lord is with her.  His rod and his staff comfort her; he prepares the table before her in the presence of her enemies and anoints her head with oil.  Goodness and mercy shall follow Helen all the days of her life and she will dwell in the house of the Lord forever...

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2025 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home.  The interment will follow at Holly Springs Cemetery.  Public viewing will be held on Wednesday from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
