Gladys Alberta Evans was born on Monday, June 8, 1931, in Level Land (Abbeville County), SC to the late Cagie Latimer and Beatrice Power Latimer.
She was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church since childhood, where she was a faithful member of the choir and missionaries. Sister Evans adored her Pastor, First Lady, and Church Family. She retired from Chiquola Mill in Honea Path after twenty-five and a half years. After retirement, she worked at Hamrick's in Anderson and Burger King in Honea Path.
She loved walking up and down the street, sitting on her front porch, and attending the Honea Path Senior Citizen's Center. Some of her favorite hobbies were: baking all kinds of cakes, especially red velvet. She also challenged herself to bake various fruit cobbler and enjoyed canned fruits, such as figs, peaches, pears, and muscadines. During the summer, Sister Evans would press her way to the fields to pick greens, polk salad, tomatoes, peaches, corn, plums, and strawberries. She loved planting flowers and green plants, and she received the greatest joy out of watching them grow. She also loved to fish (and was really good at it), make beads, and throw pillows in her spare time.
Sister Evans leaves to mourn her passing, four children: two daughters, Patricia Evans Jamison (George) of Honea Path, SC, and Pastor Faye Evans Johnson (Matthew) of Rock Hill, SC; two sons, Gary Evans (Elaine) of Anderson, SC and Stanley Evans of Honea Path, SC; two sisters, Lela Garrett of Jamaica, NY and Rev. Jean Dorn of Greenwood, SC; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her adorable son, Freddie Evans; one sister, Dorothy Mae Latimer Taylor; and two brothers, John R. Latimer and Lura Latimer.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Springfield Baptist Church (Level Land Community). The interment will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing Monday from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family is at the home, 233 S. Shirley Ave., Honea Path, SC 29654.
