Deacon Garland David Valentine was born on May 8, 1948, in Iva, South Carolina, to the late David Valentine and Cornelia Johnson. From an early age, Garland’s life reflected discipline, strength, and faith—qualities that guided him throughout his earthly journey.

Garland attended public school in Anderson County, South Carolina. He went to the New Deal High school in Starr, South Carolina and was in the graduating class of 1966. He was an outstanding football player and loved his time there until he was drafted to the United States Army.

Deacon Valentine proudly served his country in the United States Army, demonstrating honor, courage, and commitment. Following his military service, he dedicated over 30 years of faithful work as a mechanical engineer at Hydra Rig, where he was known for his skill, dependability, and strong work ethic.

Beyond his professional life, Garland found joy and peace in his lifelong love for horses. He was a proud and active member of Circle L5, the largest horse-riding organization in the DFW area, where he formed lasting friendships and embraced the freedom and fellowship found in the saddle. He also was a member of a van and motorcycle club he loved to be involved and active in different organizations. He loved all types of stuff outdoor raising cattle and hunting. He also was a football coach of the Forest Hill Little League team.

Most importantly, Deacon Valentine was a man of unshakable faith. He believed in God all his life and was a faithful member of Greater Saint Mark Ministry for over 50 years. He served the church tirelessly in many capacities, but none more significant than his role as Chairman of the Deacon Board. A servant leader, mentor, and pillar of the church, he loved his Bishop deeply—and that love was wholeheartedly returned. His commitment to God’s work was evident in every task he undertook, every prayer he offered, and every soul he encouraged.

On December 18, 2025, the Lord lovingly called Deacon Garland Valentine home transitioning from labor to reward and exchanging earthly pastures for eternal glory reuniting him with his parents David Valentine and Cornelia Johnson ; his son Garland Valentine Jr.; one brother Artis Valentine and 3 sister Hilda Anderson , Connie Rice and Darlene Pruitt .

Left in the caring hands of God are his devoted wife, Doris Valentine; loving children, Vernessa Tate, Coretta McGowan, Tomeka Valentine, Secily Valentine, Gaylon Valentine, and Garland Valentine III; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, James Valentine ( Shirley) , Mashon Willingham ( Mary); sisters, Geraldine Latimore ( Richard) , Kathy ( Pat) Jones , Diana Blount, Sandra Williams ( Lenard) and Betty Flood ( Ronnie) sister in law Vicki Smith and brother in Law Robert Nichols and a host of extended family, church family, and dear friends.

Though he has laid down his earthly tools and reins, Deacon Garland Valentine’s legacy of faith, service, love, and devotion will continue to ride on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
