Dr. Kevin McCowan Obituary

Dr. Kevin Gary McCowan was born on August 29, 1963, in Anderson, South Carolina, the eldest of three sons born to Charles and Rachel McCowan. Raised in a devout Christian household, Kevin and his brothers were cared for by their grandmother. They attended Mt. Carmel CME Church, where their Sundays were filled with spiritual guidance that shaped Kevin's strong lifelong connection with God. From a young age, Kevin expressed his ambition to become a doctor, a vision he held close throughout his life.

Kevin attended Westside High School, excelling both on the football field and in the classroom. His standout performance earned him a football scholarship to Morehouse College, where he thrived athletically and socially, becoming a cherished Omega Psi Phi fraternity member.   Embracing Omega's Purple and Gold colors, Kevin forged deep bonds with his fraternity brothers that endured his entire life.  After completing his undergraduate studies, Kevin entered the dual-degree program in Medicine and Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After attaining his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees, Kevin pursued training in General Surgery at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. During his residency, he developed a strong interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques, enabling a wide range of procedures through small incisions.  With over 20 years devoted to medicine, Kevin McCowan was motivated by his deep faith and the unwavering support of his family and friends. Among his notable achievements, he authored the book "A Time to Pray, A Time for Peace...A Surgeon's Story," recounting his experiences at Ground Zero during 9/11. He was also actively involved in community service, volunteering regularly. Outside of medicine, Kevin had a passion for golf, reflected in his collection of numerous golf trophies.

Kevin's journey was marked by resilience and determination, encapsulated by his favorite quote, "Tough times don’t last but tough people do." Throughout his career, he faced challenges with grace and continued to serve his community until his unexpected passing.

Kevin is survived by his brother George, daughter Morgan, son Lanair "Jabbar" (Tai), grandson Lanair II, and a large circle of relatives, friends, and fraternity brothers who cherish his memory dearly.
