Birdie Gilliard was born on July 21, 1931 in Anderson County to the late W.H. Gilliard and Rosa Lee Owen Gilliard. Birdie worked for 30 years as a nurse with Dr’s. Gaillard and Hinnant on South Fant Street in Anderson, South Carolina. She entered eternal rest Thursday, April 27, 2023 at home surrounded by loved ones.
She was a member at Mt. Able Baptist Church in Pendleton, South Carolina where she was active until her health started to decline. Birdie was affectionately called Mom, Aunt Birdie, Auntie, Bert, and by her grandchildren, Grandmama & “GG” for Great Grandmother. Birdie leaves to cherish many fond and loving memories to three devoted children, Yvonne Gilliard Paulding (Todd) of Charlotte, NC, Pamela Doreen Gilliard of the home Anderson, SC and Michael Darnel Gilliard (Angela) of Seneca, SC; one nephew who grew up like a son, Bernard Shell (Karrie-Jo) of Decatur, GA; one granddaughter, Felicia Paulding of Charlotte, NC; three grandsons, Airman Abrahm Paulding of Las Vegas, NV, Joshua Gilliard of Charlotte, NC and Deputy Sherriff Steven Gilliard of Seneca, SC; two great-grandchildren, Dion Martez Hart Jr. and Donyae Maurice Hart; along with a host of nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
Birdie was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Walter Maurice Gilliard; seven sisters, Mamie Gilliard, Ethel Mae Gilliard, Essie Lee Wilson, Katie Dean, Mader Jackson, Thelma Shell, Catherine McClendon; three brothers, Leroy Gilliard, Adele Gilliard and H Jr.
The funeral will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at Mt. Able Baptist Church. The interment will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be held on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
