Betty Jean Robinson Massey (known to many as “Popeye”) entered into rest on December 10, 2022 after a short battle with cancer. She went peacefully in her home.
Betty Jean was born on December 14, 1947. She was the oldest of four siblings. She was a member of Welfare Baptist Church in Belton, South Carolina. She graduated from Westside High School in 1965. She worked for many years until her health declined which led to an early retirement.
On June 18, 1965, Betty Jean married her high school sweetheart Roosevelt Massey, Sr. They had been married for 57 years at the time of her death. To their union, four children were born. Betty Jean bowled for many years, and she often traveled to different cities to compete. Christmas was her favorite holiday and time of year. She loved to decorate inside and outside her home with lots of Christmas décor. Betty Jean also loved to shop. A couple of her favorite stores were the Haven of Rest and Goodwill. Thrifting was a pastime pleasure for her. In addition to shopping, she loved to fish, cook, and spend time with her flowers. Most of all, she loved her family. They meant everything to her.
Betty Jean is survived by her husband Roosevelt Massey, Sr., whom she loved dearly; her children, Lawrence “Whammy” Massey, Michael Anthony Massey (Kamilah), and Michelle Denise Sarumi (Akolade); her sister, Ophelia Morgan; her aunt, Pauline “Big Mama” Williams; a brother-in-law, Charles Smith; two sisters-in-law, Florence Smith and Betty Sanders; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Betty Jean is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Curly Jenkins and Rosellen Meyers; her sisters, Jacqueline Danzy and Mary Ann Oliver; and her oldest son, Roosevelt Massey, Jr.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2022 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home. Public viewing will be held on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
