Bessie Thompson Weir

Bessie Thompson Weir, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, February 13, 2023 at her home.

Born October 13, 1927 in Anderson, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Lois Hutchinson and Wilton Thompson. Bessie attended the public schools of Anderson, SC. After completing high school, Bessie graduated from Bennett College in Greensboro, NC, with a BA Degree in Education.  She began her career teaching at Perry Elementary School in Anderson, SC. Bessie eventually would integrate the teaching faculty at Centerville Elementary where she was known as a dedicated and respected teacher. She retired from Centerville Elementary after teaching for 35 years.

Bessie was a dedicated and faithful member of St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church. Her love of teaching carried over into her faith where she served as the director of Religious Education.  She taught Sunday School classes and served as director and teacher of Summer Vacation Bible School. She also served on the church's Parish Council and Women's Council.

Bessie is survived by her daughters, Andreia Hamilton (Ernest) of Greenville, SC and Valerie Merritt (Eddie) of Charlotte, NC and her son, Leonard Weir (Violetta) of Carmel, Indiana.  She leaves a lasting legacy for her cherished grandchildren, Ryan Hamilton (Melissa), Lindsay H. Irvin (Nick), Allison Merritt, Miles Merritt, Lauren Merritt, Leonard "LJ" Weir and Jillian Weir.  She also leaves behind a niece and nephew, Madeline and Clifton Weir, as well as her great-grands, Carolina Chicago "CC" Irvin, Augustin "Gus" Hamilton and Sophia Elyse Hamilton.

Bessie was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Crayton "Baby John" Weir whom she was married to for 61 years.

Though our world has dimmed a bit, we know her joy, her laughter, her light and especially her wisdom will radiate within us for a long time to come.  The family wishes to thank ALL of the caregivers for their kindness and compassion.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church Food Pantry, 1821 White St, Anderson, SC 29624.

The funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church.  The interment will follow at Westview Cemetery.  Public viewing Friday 1:00 - 6:00 p.m.
