Bernice Brown Tate, age 86, of 1720 Belton Street, Anderson, SC departed this life on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at her home.
Bernice was born in Anderson, SC to Cornelia Frazier Brown and Gassy Brown on August 6, 1936. In her early years, Bernice grew up in Starr, SC and later graduated from Westside High School in 1955. After graduating from high school, Bernice was employed by Anderson Memorial Hospital in the Dietary Department as a cook. She was a devoted employee for 40 years until she retired.
Bernice was a devoted member of Evergreen C.M.E. Church in Starr, SC. During her time there, she was a member of the church choir, Sunday School secretary, and a member of the Shape Note Choir.
Bernice leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband, Larkin Tate of the home; one son, James Tate; one grandson, Nytavioun Tate; two great-grandsons, Kendarious Tate and Noah Tate; one surviving sibling, Luther Brown; sisters-in-law, Mary Lee (Marcell) Fant, Catherine (Petigree) Oliver, Geraldine Davis, Ruby (Willie) Dennis, and Betty Jane Thompson; and a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Pauline Oliver, Alberta Saddler, Eva Mae Tate, and Lucious Greene; brothers, Arthur Brown and Levi Brown; grandson, Keyona Tate; and in-laws, Christine Williams, Jessie Mae Tate, George Tate, Nate Thompson, Leon Williams, John Sally, June Tate, and Honey Oliver.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on July 15, 2023 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home. The interment will follow at Evergreen C.M.E. Church Cemetery. Public viewing will be held on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
