Erskine Carter, affectionately known as Dickie, was born in Hartwell Georgia to Henry Carter Sr. and Cora Carter. He transitioned peacefully on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at his home in Long Branch, NJ.
Erskine graduated from Hart County Training School in Hartwell, GA in 1963 at the age of 16 and relocated to Long Branch, NJ shortly thereafter. He was drafted into the United States Army where he served 2 years and was honorably discharged. He then began a dedicated 30 plus year career with NJ Natural Gas Co. in Wall, NJ retiring in 2006.
Erskine was a current member of American Legion Association and a former member of Masonic Lodge #42, Long Branch, NJ. He was a former member of Second Baptist Church, Long Branch, NJ and never wavered in his faith and walk with the Lord. He will be missed by all he touched.
He was predeceased by his parents, Henry Carter Sr. and Cora Bowman Carter; stepmother, Mary Mary Reed Carter; one sister, Audrey Adams; two brothers, Stephen Carter and John Reed; and one son, Erskine Covin Carter.
He leaves to cherish his memory: one son Erskine Renard Brent of Ocean County, NJ; his adoring daughter, Ursula A. Carter Covin of Long Branch, NJ; three sisters, Gloria Carter Craft of Anderson, SC, Jacqueline Thomas of Asbury Park, NJ, and Barbara Peterson; three brothers, Henry "Sonny" Carter Jr. (Linda) of Anderson, SC, James "Skeet" E. Carter of Anderson, SC, and Robert Reed; two honorary sons, Terence Covin of Long Branch, NJ and Eric Covin of Keansburg, NJ; many treasured grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends.
Services will be held in New Jersey on Friday, March 9, 2018.
The funeral service in South Carolina will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 in the Ollie Robinson Brown Memorial Chapel of Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home. The interment will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC with military honors. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral on Wednesday.
The family is at the home of his brother, Henry Carter, 109 Bailey Street Anderson, SC and at the home of his sister, Gloria Craft, 305 Morris Lane Anderson, SC.
